Gondola cabin climbing above Howe Sound towards the summit lodge, Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, British Columbia

Sea to Sky Gondola

The Sea to Sky Gondola climbs 885 metres above Howe Sound from a base beside Highway 99, two kilometres south of Squamish, and it is the one paid attraction on the Sea to Sky corridor that most Vancouver day trips are built around. This page carries the price the operator publishes today rather than the one search engines still cache, the hours band by band, the annual maintenance closure that catches people out in November, the suspension bridge and platforms at the top, and the ways up from the city without a car. The rest of the town is on the Squamish page, and the full corridor sits under day trips from Vancouver.

Quick answer The real price, the hours, the closure, how long to allow

An adult day lift ticket is $59.40 (CA$81.95) at the ticket window and $53.60 (CA$73.95) bought online, and it covers the round-trip ride, the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, three viewing platforms and the summit trails. There are no reservations and no time slots: the operator's own FAQ says a standard day ticket is valid on any day until its printed expiry.

Key takeaways

  • Buy online before you leave the city. Every age band is CA$8 to CA$26 cheaper that way, and the adult saving of $5.80 (CA$8) is larger than the bus fare from Squamish town. The full grid is in the table below, and the admission card is the operator's own ticket sold with free cancellation.
  • The gondola is shut November 9 to November 26 for annual maintenance and nothing on the highway warns you. If your dates fall there, the Stawamus Chief and Shannon Falls next door stay open and cost nothing.
  • Without a car, the realistic options are a scheduled coach to Squamish or a day trip that includes admission, such as the ten-hour Whistler and gondola run. The fares are compared on getting around Vancouver and the corridor is mapped on day trips.

Prices, ratings and details are the platform's own, checked in Q3 2026; dollar figures are the listed prices — the platform bills in your account's currency.

The Price In The Search Result Is Three Seasons Old

This is the single most useful thing this page can tell you. A cached adult figure of about CA$34.95 is still surfacing in search results and in older guides. The operator's own shop, read in Q3 2026, says something very different, and every age band is cheaper online than at the window.

Nobody is being dishonest here. The gondola simply raised its prices over several seasons and the old number stuck in the index. The gap matters: a family of two adults and two children arriving on the old figure would budget around CA$140 and hand over CA$191.95 at the window. Buy the same family ticket online and it is CA$165.95, which is CA$26 back for two minutes of work in the car park before you set off.

The pattern holds across the grid. Adults save CA$8, seniors CA$8, youths CA$8, children CA$8 and families CA$26 by buying on the operator's own site rather than at the ticket window. There is no reseller price war to shop around: the gondola's own shop is the cheapest published route in, and the one card sold on the platforms is the operator's own ticket with cancellation attached rather than a discount.

The ride-down-only ticket, and who it is for

There is a sixth band nobody advertises: ride down only, $18.11 (CA$25) at the window and $13.76 (CA$19) online. It exists because walkers reach the summit on foot up the Sea Summit Trail and want a lift home, and it is the cheapest way to touch this attraction at all.

It is not a shortcut. The climb is a genuine mountain hike, not a stroll, and it is the same argument as the Grouse Grind on the North Shore: free to walk up, paid to come down. If you are pricing a corridor day rather than a mountain day, the CA$19 ticket is the line that turns the gondola from a CA$74 decision into a CA$19 one.

What nobody publishes

Two things. First, tax: the hours and prices page does not say whether GST sits inside the ticket price or on top, so this page does not either. Compare that with Capilano Suspension Bridge, which states plainly that its park rates are subject to GST, and with Butchart Gardens across the water, which states that its rates include tax.

Second, an annual membership price appears on the site as being worth less than two lift tickets, but the membership page itself sells the figure through a booking flow, so no membership number is printed here.

What The Ticket Buys At The Summit

The ride is ten to fifteen minutes from the base to the Summit Lodge at 885 metres, in cabins built by the Swiss firm CWA on a lift by the Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr. Everything above is included in the day ticket; there is no second gate at the top.

The Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge

The bridge is the reason most people come, and the two published figures for it do not agree. The operator's own attraction page calls it approximately 100 metres long; the Wikipedia article, citing the builders Macdonald & Lawrence Timber Framing, gives 95 metres and an October 2013 completion date. Either way it is open year round, it is included in the day ticket rather than sold separately, and the operator states it is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

It hangs over a drop rather than a river, which is what makes it feel different from Capilano or the free bridge at Lynn Canyon in the city. The far end lands you at the Spirit Viewing Platform, 100 metres from the Summit Lodge across the bridge or 150 metres round on the Spirit Trail if the crossing is not for you.

Three viewing platforms, and the one worth the walk

The Summit Lodge Viewing Deck is a 5,000 square foot terrace attached to the licensed lodge, straight off the gondola, facing Howe Sound and the Tantalus Range. The Spirit Viewing Platform sits across the bridge with interpretive panels about the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, whose territory this is.

The third is the one people miss. The Chief Overlook hangs over hundreds of metres of drop from the middle of the Panorama Trail, roughly 800 metres from the lodge, which the operator puts at a ten to twenty minute walk depending on pace. From it you look down on hikers on the back of the Stawamus Chief and across to the windsurfers at the Spit. If you only have two hours at the top, spend forty minutes of them getting to this platform and back.

Food, and what the site will not take

There are several outlets at the summit and the base, among them the Sky Pilot Smokehouse, the Co-Pilot Cafe and the Edge Bar, and the operator says reservations are not required at any of them. What it will not do is take your cash: the gondola is cashless at every food outlet and retail shop, and if you have only notes you buy a gift card with exact change at Guest Services and spend that. There is no change given for any transaction.

Drones are banned on the property and the summit tenure area, and the whole site is smoke and vape free, which the operator ties to summer fire risk rather than to comfort.

Hours, The November Closure And What Runs In Winter

The gondola publishes its year in date bands rather than as a single season, and reads them off its own hours and prices page. These are the bands as published in Q3 2026.

Two things in this table decide trips. The first is the last ride down, which is always an hour after closing, so an 8 p.m. close means you can stay until 9 p.m. The second is the maintenance closure: November 9 to November 26, with the operator's FAQ naming November 27 as the reopening. Guest Services and the Basecamp retail store stay open through it, so a driver can arrive, find the lift stopped and still buy a coffee, which is precisely the trip nobody wants.

The autumn band has a further catch that only appears in a footnote on the operator's page: the gondola closes at 6 p.m. rather than 8 p.m. on September 19, September 26 and October 3 for private events. If you are driving up for a late-summer evening on one of those dates, that is two hours you do not have.

Winter at the top

From late November the summit turns over to winter walking, snowshoeing, tubing and ski touring access, and the day lift ticket is still the way in. You may carry ski and snowboard equipment up if you have proper backcountry gear, and the operator points anyone doing that at the avalanche forecast rather than at its own conditions page.

That is a real distinction from the North Shore mountains. Cypress and Mount Seymour sell winter lift tickets for skiing; the Sea to Sky Gondola sells you height and access, and the skiing beyond it is backcountry.

The Gondola In Eight Dates, Including The Two Nobody Advertises

This lift has been cut down twice by people who have never been caught. Neither event appears anywhere on the pages that sell tickets, and both explain why the base station now looks the way it does.

  1. October 2013

  4. February 14, 2020

The lift ran again after six months, reaching full service in May 2020.

  5. September 14, 2020

The cable is cut a second time

Only six of the thirty-nine carriers stayed usable. The gondola closed for eight months.

  6. June 11, 2021

The footage showed a security guard narrowly missed by a falling cable. The company sued its security contractor and posted a CA$500,000 reward.

  8. February 2026

    Still nobody prosecuted

Both cuttings remain unsolved, and neither appears on any page of the operator's site that sells a ticket.

Dates, carrier counts and the reward figure from the Sea to Sky Gondola article on Wikipedia, read in Q3 2026, which cites the RCMP release and contemporaneous news coverage. Our own facts pack recorded that the operator's ticket pages carry none of this, and they still do not: we re-read the hours, prices, gondola and FAQ pages in Q3 2026 and found no mention.

How Much Time To Give The Sea To Sky Gondola

The operator publishes no visit length at all. The only durations it does state are ten to fifteen minutes for the ride and ten to twenty minutes to walk from the Summit Lodge to the Chief Overlook. These three routings are ours, built from those figures and the trail distances on the operator's own pages.

The variable is not the gondola, it is how far you walk once you are off it. Almost everyone who reports being disappointed did the first routing, saw the view from the deck, crossed the bridge and went back down inside an hour, which is a lot of money for a photograph. The Panorama Trail is what the ticket is actually worth.

Getting To The Sea To Sky Gondola Without A Car

The base sits at 36800 Highway 99, two kilometres south of Squamish. The operator calls it a 45-minute drive from Vancouver; allow an hour in real traffic and longer on a summer Friday.

There is no public transit between Vancouver and the Sea to Sky corridor, so the choices are a scheduled private coach, a day trip with the admission inside it, or a car. The published coach fares are all Squamish or Whistler fares, because the corridor operators price to the town rather than to the gondola.

YVR Skylynx charges CA$32 one way and CA$42 return from downtown Vancouver to Squamish or Whistler, which is one hour to the Squamish stop. Its airport fares are CA$55 and CA$75. Epic Rides runs Burrard Station to Whistler direct at CA$32.50 one way and CA$44 return, but it does not stop for the gondola. The gondola's own getting-here page names two further options and prices neither: the Squamish Connector shuttle from two downtown Vancouver pickup points, and BC Transit's seasonal Route 5 South Park. Squamish Connector advertises trips from CA$18.50 on its home page and publishes no fare table outside its booking engine, so no shuttle fare is printed here.

If you drive

Parking sits at the base of the lift and costs CA$10 plus taxes for the day, paid through the PayByPhone app or at Guest Services. There is no overnight parking on Friday and Saturday in summer, and any other overnight stay has to be arranged with Guest Services first.

The drive itself is the attraction people underrate. Highway 99 runs along the shoreline of Howe Sound the whole way, and Shannon Falls is a signed pull-out barely a minute further north with a 350 metre trail to the viewing platforms. Almost every coach day trip stops there for twenty to thirty minutes precisely because it is free and it is next door. For the shape of a first visit, start from our Vancouver travel guide.

At The Sea To Sky Gondola: What To Do, And What Not To

Six decisions that change the day, all of them made before you reach the base station.

Do

  • Buy the ticket online in the car park if you forgot at home. The saving is CA$8 an adult and CA$26 a family, and the window is the only place it costs more.
  • Walk the Panorama Trail to the Chief Overlook. It is about 800 metres from the lodge and it is the platform that hangs over the drop.
  • Check the date band before you set the alarm. An October weekday closes at 16:00, five hours earlier than a July evening.
  • Bring a card. The whole site is cashless, and cash only buys a gift card at exact change.
  • Pair it with Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief, both free and both within two kilometres of the base.

Don't

  • Do not plan a mid-November visit without checking the closure. The lift stops on November 9 and reopens on November 27, and no sign on Highway 99 says so.
  • Do not trust a price you saw in a search result. The cached adult figure of about CA$34.95 is several seasons old; the window price is now CA$81.95.
  • Do not book a time slot, because there are none. The operator states day tickets are valid any day until the printed expiry.
  • Do not bring a drone. They are banned on the property and across the summit tenure area.
  • Do not treat the ride-down-only ticket as a shortcut. It is for people who have already climbed the Sea Summit Trail on foot.

Every line here is argued above with its source; nothing in this list appears for the first time.

Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know About The Sea To Sky Gondola

Each of these came out of a page we read in this run, and each one is followed by where it came from.

  • The lift has been deliberately cut down twice, in August 2019 and September 2020, and nobody has ever been charged; the company posted a CA$500,000 reward (Wikipedia's Sea to Sky Gondola article, citing the RCMP release, read in Q3 2026).
  • Your day ticket is not tied to the date you bought it. The operator's FAQ says standard day tickets are valid on any day until the printed expiry and that reservations are not accepted at all (seatoskygondola.com FAQ, read in Q3 2026).
  • There are thirty-nine cabins, each rated for 640 kg or eight people, which is why the queue keeps moving even when the car park is full (seatoskygondola.com FAQ, read in Q3 2026).
  • The Summit Lodge sits at 885 metres above Howe Sound, which is 200 metres lower than the top of the Grouse Mountain Skyride and feels far higher because the water starts at zero directly below you (seatoskygondola.com FAQ and grousemountain.com, read in Q3 2026).
  • The two published lengths for the suspension bridge disagree: the operator says approximately 100 metres, the builders' figure recorded on Wikipedia is 95 metres. No page reconciles them (seatoskygondola.com attractions page and Wikipedia, read in Q3 2026).

Three attractions share two kilometres of Highway 99 south of Squamish. The gondola base is the only one of them that charges anything.

Sea To Sky Gondola Questions

How much does the Sea to Sky Gondola cost?

An adult day lift ticket is $59.40 (CA$81.95) at the ticket window and $53.60 (CA$73.95) online, read from the operator's own shop in Q3 2026. Seniors are CA$76.95 and CA$68.95, youths CA$51.95 and CA$43.95, children 6 to 12 CA$37.95 and CA$29.95, and a family of four CA$191.95 and CA$165.95. Children 5 and under ride free with a ticket issued at Guest Services. The full grid and the online saving are above, and a cancellable version of the same ride is the admission card.

What happened to the Sea to Sky Gondola?

The haul rope was deliberately cut twice, on August 10, 2019 and again on September 14, 2020, dropping the cabins both times; the second attack closed the lift for eight months. The company posted a CA$500,000 reward and nobody has been prosecuted. None of it appears on any page of the operator's site that sells a ticket, which is why the timeline above carries it with its sources.

How long do you spend at the Sea to Sky Gondola?

The operator publishes no visit length. Ninety minutes covers the ride, the Summit Lodge deck, the suspension bridge and the Spirit platform; three to four hours covers both interpretive loops and the Chief Overlook, which is roughly 800 metres from the lodge. Our three routings set out what each one skips. The coach day trips allow between 90 minutes and two hours, so the mini-coach version is the one that fits the fuller visit.

What is included in the Sea to Sky Gondola ticket?

The round-trip ride, the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, the Summit Lodge viewing deck, the Spirit and Chief Overlook platforms and the summit trail network. The operator's FAQ confirms the bridge is simply part of the trail network rather than a separate charge. Parking at CA$10 plus taxes, food and guided products such as the via ferrata are not included. What the summit holds is above.

Is the Sea to Sky Gondola open in November?

Not for most of it. The lift closes November 9 and the operator's FAQ names November 27 as the reopening, for annual maintenance. Guest Services and the base retail store stay open through the shutdown, so the base area can look alive while the cable is stopped. The full band-by-band calendar is in hours and closures, and if your dates land there, Squamish still has two free attractions two kilometres away.

Do you need to book Sea to Sky Gondola tickets in advance?

No. The operator says outright that it does not accept reservations for gondola rides and that standard day tickets are valid on any day until the printed expiry. Advance buying is about price rather than availability: online is CA$8 to CA$26 cheaper than the window on every band. If you want a ticket you can cancel instead, that is what the reserved admission card offers.

Can you get to the Sea to Sky Gondola without a car?

Yes, but not on public transit, because none runs between Vancouver and the corridor. YVR Skylynx charges $23.20 (CA$32) one way to Squamish town, the operator names a Squamish Connector shuttle that publishes no fare table, and BC Transit runs a seasonal Route 5. The simplest option is a day trip with admission inside the fare, such as the ten-hour Whistler and gondola run. Fares are compared in getting there and on getting around Vancouver.

Check What Runs On Your Date

The gondola's own ticket shows live availability and cancels free up to 24 hours before, which the window price does not.
