Day Trips From Vancouver

Whistler is roughly 120 km up Highway 99 and Epic Rides publishes a direct running time of 1 h 45 min from Burrard Station to the Gateway bus loop. Victoria is closer as the crow flies and takes more than twice as long, because the trip is a bus to Tsawwassen, a 1 h 35 min sailing, and a bus from Swartz Bay into town, with the terminals an hour outside each city at both ends.

That is the whole reason the guided Victoria runs are thirteen hours while the guided Whistler runs are ten or eleven. It is not that Victoria is further. It is that a ferry cannot be hurried and the two terminals are nowhere near the two downtowns.

There is one more structural fact worth knowing before you compare anything: there is no public transit between Vancouver and Whistler or Squamish. Neither TransLink nor BC Transit runs the corridor. Both scheduled operators are private companies publishing their own fares, and those fares are the only ones that exist. Every figure on this page for the northern trips comes from an operator, not an authority.

They serve the same corridor at almost the same price and differ on where they start and how many stops they make.

And the two ferry crossings

BC Ferries prices the Victoria route one way and the Bowen route return, which is the source of most of the confusion when people compare them. A walk-on adult pays CA$21.00 each way to Swartz Bay and CA$12.45 in total to Bowen and back. A 5 percent fuel surcharge is then applied at payment to both.

The vehicle deck is where the Victoria trip stops being a cheap day. A standard car under 20 feet is CA$89.00 one way on top of the driver's own CA$21.00 fare, so a same-day return with a car is CA$220.00 against CA$42.00 on foot. Foot passengers do not need a reservation on either route. Drivers who want a guaranteed sailing without prepaying buy a separate CA$20 reservation fee and then pay the at-terminal tariff on departure.

One local detail worth carrying: BC residents aged 65 and over travel free as foot passengers Monday to Thursday outside statutory holidays. It is a residents' programme and needs documentation, so it is not available to visitors, whatever a forum thread says.

- First trip, one day, no car: Squamish plus the Sea to Sky Gondola. One coach fare covers both, the gondola is the view everyone comes north for, and Shannon Falls is a 350 metre walk from the same pull-out. - Travelling with someone who will not hike: Whistler. It is the one destination on this list where the arrival point is a car-free village with restaurants, and the local shuttle around it is free. - You want a city rather than a mountain: Victoria, and give it two days if you can. Thirteen hours buys you about four on the ground once the ferry and the two terminal transfers are paid for. - You have half a day and CA$20: Bowen Island. A bus, a twenty minute crossing and a village at the dock, with no ticket to book and nothing to miss. - You are travelling with children: Steveston or the Richmond Night Market. Both are inside the SkyTrain network, both are short, and youth 17 and under enter the cannery free. The family planning page has the rest. - It is raining hard on the North Shore: none of them. Every trip on this page is a view, and a coach into cloud is CA$152 for a wet car park. The rainy day list exists for exactly that morning.

Almost every day-trip list for Vancouver includes the Rocky Mountaineer and Harrison Hot Springs. Neither is covered here, and the reason in both cases is the same: no official source publishes a figure we could print.

Rockymountaineer.com refused every automated read of its route and season pages, so we have no verified 2026 season, route list or fare for it. Tourismharrison.com and harrisonhotsprings.ca publish no distance, no drive time, no transit option, no pool price and no 2026 event date on the pages we could read; the visitor information sits behind a JavaScript menu that returns nothing. Neither is a criticism of either destination. It means that anything we wrote about them would be copied from another blog rather than sourced, and this site does not do that.

If you want either, price them on the operator's own site on the day you are booking. What we can say is what the alternatives cost, which is the whole table above.

Buy the attraction ticket online and the transport ticket early. The Sea to Sky Gondola is the clearest case: every band is cheaper online, from CA$8 on an adult to CA$26 on a family, and the window price exists mainly to catch people who did not check. Coach seats north are a different problem: Epic Rides publishes four northbound departures a day in its early September table, so a missed 8:00 is a lost morning rather than a twenty minute wait.

Go north on the clear day and across the water on the grey one. The gondola, the Chief and the PEAK 2 PEAK are all views, and cloud removes the entire product. Victoria, Steveston and the Night Market are streets, buildings and food, which work in rain.

Check what is shut before you go. The Sea to Sky Gondola closes completely from 9 to 26 November for maintenance and nothing on the highway tells you so. Butchart Gardens is closed 18 to 31 January, which is the only date range in its year when the gates do not open. The Richmond Night Market does not open on weekdays at all.
